Pre-Season – Rev. Dr. Hilary J. Barrett: June 9, 2024

The Rev. Dr. Hilary J. Barrett is the Director of Worship and Religious Life at the Bay View Association. Raised in Berkeley, California, she received an undergraduate degree in World and Comparative Literature from San Francisco State University and holds graduate degrees from United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities (M. Div.) and Pacific School of Religion (D. Min). Her Doctor of Ministry thesis, Telling Stories: Narrative Approaches to Congregational Studies, explores the power of stories to shape a community’s sense of who they are and what they believe is possible for them. Prior to retiring from full-time parish ministry, Dr. Barrett served in settled pastorates and interim settings in southeastern Pennsylvania for 33 years. She and her husband, Rob Scarrow, reside in suburban Philadelphia in the off-season. They have one adult son named, Sam (and a black Lab named, Sophie).

Week 1 – Professor Greg Carey: June 16 – 20, 2024

Professor of New Testament

Lancaster Theological Seminary, Lancaster, PA

Greg Carey has taught at Lancaster Theological Seminary since 1999, having previously taught at Rhodes College and Winthrop University. In addition to teaching, he directs the seminary’s Master of Arts in Religion program. He holds a BA from Rhodes College, an MDiv from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a PhD from Vanderbilt University (1996). Greg teaches courses on the New Testament and on biblical and contextual interpretation, along with a doctoral seminar devoted to research methodologies. His elective courses include: Luke and Acts, the Parables of Jesus, and Romans.

Week 2 – Rev. Dr. Shawnthea Monroe: June 23 – 27, 2024

The Peoples Church, East Lansing, MI

A native of South Dakota, Dr. Monroe holds degrees from the University of Minnesota, Yale Divinity School, and Chicago Theological Seminary. She has served on the board of the Louisville Institute, the Deaconess Foundation, and is currently on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Conference of the United Church of Christ. She is a member of the American Academy of Religion and has taught courses in preaching, pastoral leadership, contemporary culture and theology, and grant writing for non-profit organizations. An accomplished writer, she is the author of Not So Desperate: Fantasy, Fact and Faith on Wisteria Lane (Chalice Press, 2006) and co-author of Living Christianity: A Pastoral Theology for Today (Fortress, 2009).

Before coming to The Peoples Church, Dr. Monroe served Plymouth Church UCC in Shaker Heights, Ohio, First Congregational Church UCC (Moorhead, MN) and Trinitarian Congregational Church (Concord, MA). Shawnthea is married to Dr. Neil Mueller, who teaches trumpet at Central Michigan University, and they have three adult children. Besides her family and ministry, Shawnthea enjoys gardening, canning, and teaching aerobics.

Week 3 – Rev. Debbie Blue: June 30 – July 4, 2024

Rev. Debbie Blue approaches scripture like a farm wife handles a chicken, carefully but not delicately, thoroughly but not exactly cautiously. She is a writer, preacher, and recently retired founding pastor of House Of Mercy in St. Paul, Minnesota (once named “the Best Church for Non-Church Goers”). She is the author of Sensual Orthodoxy, From Stone to Living Word, Consider the Birds: A Provocative Guide to Birds of the Bible, Consider the Women, and Magnificat: A God Who Never Stopped Considering Women. Her essays, sermons, and reflections on the scripture have appeared in a wide variety of publications. Debbie and her family live with friends and animals on a farm in rural Minnesota. She is a graduate of Yale Divinity School.

Week 4 – BIG SUNDAY – Rev. Winn Collier: July 7, 2024

Winn Collier, a pastor for 28 years, was the founding pastor of All Souls in Charlottesville, Virginia. Winn now teaches pastoral theology and directs the Eugene Peterson Center for Christian Imagination at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, MI. An Episcopal priest, Winn holds a PhD. in Religion & Literature from the University of Virginia, where he explored the sacramental vision of Wendell Berry’s fiction. Winn has written five books (most recently the epistolary novel, Love Big, Be Well: Letters to a Smalltown Church and A Burning in My Bones, the biography of Eugene Peterson) and for numerous periodicals, including Christian Century, Christianity Today, and the Washington Post. Winn and his wife, Miska, (a spiritual director and yoga teacher) have two college-age sons and a rollicking dog, Gus, (short for St. Augustine).

American Experience 2024 – Professor Ada Ferrer: July 8 – 12, 2024

This year the American Experience goes to the Caribbean, as Professor Ada Ferrer presents a series of lectures exploring five hundred years of complex relations between Cuba and the United States.  As a Cuban American herself, Professor Ferrer presents a vivid and deeply personal account of Cuban history that focuses on the experiences of the island’s inhabitants, not just on the geopolitical competition between major powers that have for centuries shaped its fate.  In the eighteenth and nineteenth century these relations were rooted in sugar and slavery. In the twentieth century they were defined by Cuban efforts to shake off U.S. political domination and to claim independence from big powers — struggles that began long before Fidel Castro’s rise to power.

Professor Ferrer, born in Cuba between the Bay of Pigs invasion of 1961 and the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, has been traveling to and conducting research in Cuba since 1990, occasionally accompanied by her husband and daughters.  Her essay “My Brother’s Keeper,” published by The New Yorker, tells the story of her and her family’s relationship with the Cuban Revolution. 

Her Bay View lectures will be based on her book Cuba: An American History, which won the Pulitzer Prize for history in 2022.  She will also devote time to discussing Haiti. Professor Ferrer is Julius Silver Professor of History and Latin American and Caribbean Studies at New York University. 

Week 5 – Professor Lori Brandt Hale: July 14 – 18, 2024

Professor of Religion, Chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy

Augsburg University, Minneapolis, MN

Dr. Lori Brandt Hale, Professor of Religion in the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Augsburg University (Minneapolis, MN), specializes in German theologian and Nazi resister Dietrich Bonhoeffer. She currently serves as the Vice-President of the International Bonhoeffer Society – English Language Section Board of Directors and is the co-editor, with W. David Hall, of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Theology, and Political Resistance (Lexington Books, 2020), published in Faith and Politics: Political Theology in a New Key, a series by Lexington Books. Together with Hall, she now serves as the editor for that series. Inspired by her increasingly diverse students at Augsburg, where she has taught since 1998, and her resolute commitment to interfaith engagement, Brandt Hale’s chapter is a constructive essay titled, “The Interfaith Imperative: How Bonhoeffer Compels Interfaith Action.”

Brandt Hale is the co-author of Bonhoeffer for Armchair Theologians (WJK, 2009), also available in Japanese and Portuguese. And, she has written numerous book chapters and articles as well as offered webinars and podcasts on Bonhoeffer’s political resistance, understanding of vocation, and relevance in contemporary times, including work addressing the question, “Is this a Bonhoeffer moment?”

She has degrees from the University of Virginia (PhD), University of Chicago Divinity School (MA), and University of Iowa (BA). She has held a number of leadership roles at Augsburg, including director of general education and department chair. Currently, she is the chair for the division of humanities and fine arts. In 2022, Professor Brandt Hale received the “Faculty of the Year” Award given by the Augsburg Day Student Government.

Week 6 – Jonathan T. Pennington: July 21 – 25, 2024

Professor of New Testament Interpretation

Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY

Dr. Pennington holds the PhD in New Testament Studies from the University of St. Andrews (Scotland). He is Professor of New Testament Interpretation at Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY as well as one of the teaching pastors at Sojourn East Church. He and his wife, Tracy, who is a professional mosaic artist, are the parents of six adult children. He is the author of many articles and books, including Jesus the Great Philosopher: Rediscovering the Wisdom Needed for the Good Life, The Sermon on the Mount and Human Flourishing, and Come and See: The Journey of Knowing God through Holy Scripture.

Week 7 – Shane Claiborne: July 28 – August 1, 2024

Shane Claiborne is a prominent speaker, activist, and best-selling author. Shane worked with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, and founded The Simple Way in Philadelphia. He heads up Red Letter Christians, a movement of folks who are committed to living “as if Jesus meant the things he said.” Shane is a champion for grace which has led him to jail advocating for the homeless, and to places like Iraq and Afghanistan to stand against war. Now grace fuels his passion to end the death penalty and help stop gun violence.

Shane’s books include Jesus for President, Red Letter Revolution, Common Prayer, Follow Me to Freedom, Jesus, Bombs and Ice Cream, Becoming the Answer to Our Prayers, Executing Grace, his classic The Irresistible Revolu-tion, Beating Guns, and his newest book, Rethinking Life. He has been featured in a number of films including “Another World Is Possible” and “Ordinary Radicals.” His books have been translated into more than a dozen languages. His work has appeared in Esquire, SPIN, Christianity Today, TIME, and The Wall Street Journal, and he has been on everything from Fox News and Al Jazeera to CNN and NPR. He’s given academic lectures at Harvard, Princeton, Liberty, Duke, and Notre Dame. In 2023, Shane received the prestigious The King Center’s Beloved Community Award for Social Justice from Dr. Bernice King (daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King).

Shane speaks regularly at denominational gatherings, festivals, and conferences around the globe.

Week 8 – Rev. Dr. Uiyeon Kim: August 4 – 8, 2024

Pastor of Discipleship

Myers Park United Methodist Church, Charlotte, NC

Uiyeon serves as the Pastor of Discipleship at Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC. Some of his main responsibilities include overseeing Children’s Ministries, Youth Ministries, and Discipleship Ministries. He also oversees the Welcome/Hospitality ministries.

Son of a retired Korean Methodist pastor, Uiyeon was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. In 1991, shortly after Uiyeon’s ninth birthday, his family moved to Lubbock, Texas where his father transitioned into the United Methodist Church. Uiyeon majored in Economics at Grinnell College before going to Duke Divinity School, where he earned his Master of Divinity and Doctorate of Ministry. He is an elder in the Western N.C. Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Uiyeon and his wife have two beautiful young children and a fourteen-year-old morky.

Week 9 – Dr. Kirk Byron Jones: August 11 – 15, 2024

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, as the second son to the late Frederick and Ora Mae Jones, Kirk Byron Jones is a graduate of Loyola University and Andover Newton Theological School, and holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Emory University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Drew University.

Dr. Jones began preaching at age 12, and has served as a pastor for over thirty years. He was the founding minister of Beacon Light Baptist Church in New Orleans, and Senior Minister at Calvary Baptist Church, Chester, PA; Ebenezer Baptist Church, Boston, MA; and the First Baptist Churches of Randolph and Tewksbury, MA.

He presently serves as Senior Pastor of Zion Baptist Church in Lynn, Massachusetts. Throughout his pastoral ministry, Rev. Jones has served on various religious and civic committees at the local and national level.

Post-Season Week 1 – Rev. Dr. James A. Harnish: August 18, 2024

The Rev. Dr. James A. Harnish (Jim) served for 43 years in pastoral ministry in the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was the founding pastor of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Orlando and served for 22 years as the Senior Pastor of Hyde Park United Methodist Church in Tampa.

Jim is the author of more than 20 books and bible studies including A Disciple’s Path, Extraordinary Ministry in Ordinary Time, and Finding Your Bearings: How Words that Guided Jesus Through Crisis Can Guide Us. His latest book, Surprised by Mary: How the Christ Who Was Born Through Mary Can Be Born Again Through You will be released this summer. He was a Consulting Editor for The New Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible and a contributor to The Wesley Study Bible.

He served on the General Board of Discipleship and the General Commission on General Conference, as a delegate to General and Jurisdictional Conferences, and particpated in World Methodist Conferences in England, Brazil, Kenya, and South Africa. He is a facilitator for the Florida Conference Institute of Preaching and a member of the Board of Visitors at Duke Divinity School.

Post-Season Week 2 – Rev. Dr. Tim Bruster: August 25, 2024

Prior to his retirement in 2022, Dr. Tim Bruster served for nineteen years as senior pastor of the 6,000-member First United Methodist Church in downtown Fort Worth, Texas. He currently serves as Director of Finance and Administrative Services for the Central Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church.

He holds degrees from Centenary College and Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University.

Before his appointment to First UMC of Fort Worth in 2003, he served several congregations in Texas.

Dr. Bruster has served on numerous boards, including Southwestern University, Perkins School of Theology Executive Board, the Texas Methodist Foundation, the Advisory Board of the Centenary College Christian Leadership Center, Texas Wesleyan University, and the Board of Directors of Downtown Fort Worth, Inc. In addition to being a delegate to the United Methodist General Conference since 2008, he has served as the first clergy alternate on the Judicial Council of the denomination since 2012.

Dr. Bruster was the preacher of the week at Bay View in June of 2017.

He is the author of a new book, Grace and Peace, a book of daily devotionals moving through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation in a year.

Tim and his wife, Susan, live in Fort Worth most of the year and spend their summers enjoying northern Michigan just down the road on Crooked Lake. They have three grown daughters: Sarah, who is married to Stephen Pepper; Katie, who is married to Alex Segreti; and Emily, who is married to Chris Wahler. They are also the proud grandparents of five grandchildren.
